Engineering and AI research, aimed at results laboratories can act on.
Our research program spans machine vision for microscopy and electrophoresis, portable high-voltage power electronics and low-cost precision optics. Everything we research is meant to reach the bench as a product.
WALEMTECH VISION
Malaria screening on thin blood films.
The model behind Ocular AI segments every red cell in the field, classifies each one and reports an estimated parasitemia. It is a compact convolutional network designed to run on the camera's own processor in real time.
- 97.1%
- Cell-level accuracy on held-out test images
- 27,558
- Expert-labeled cell images in the reference dataset
Training is augmented for the stain variation, blur, noise and color casts found in routine microscopy, and each model release is checked on slides imaged through Ocular AI before it ships.

IN DEVELOPMENT
Reading hemoglobin electrophoresis strips.
After staining, a cellulose acetate strip is photographed with a phone or Ocular camera. The software straightens the strip, separates each lane, measures band positions and intensities, and calibrates mobility against the AFSC control lane run on the same strip. Patterns are then interpreted as AA, AS, SS, AC or SC, with a confidence score and band percentages for the laboratory scientist to confirm.
Calibrating to the control on each strip makes the reading robust to differences in run time, voltage and buffer, the variables that make visual interpretation hard.
Engineering research areas
Portable high-voltage power
Battery-powered supplies up to 650 V with precision metering, hardware interlocks and fault detection that keeps runs safe without a mains connection.
Optical measurement
Optical detection of column boundaries in microhematocrit capillaries, replacing reading cards with an objective, repeatable measurement.
Embedded AI
Compact models and efficient inference for camera-side processing, so analysis works offline on modest hardware.
Collaborate with us
We work with universities, teaching hospitals and research institutes on validation studies, dataset collection and new applications for our instruments.
Partners receive instruments for the duration of a study, engineering support and access to anonymized model outputs. Proposals for clinical evaluations, student projects and joint grant applications are welcome.
